Petition – Combat Arms for Linux!

So I find this awesome FPS game called Combat Arms. Check it out:

So I try it out, and it’s awesome. Great game, awesome graphics, good concept, great integration, everything. Then I kinda lost interest and didn’t use it for a while.

Fast forward about 4 months to last month. I was pretty bored over Christmas break, and I remembered that great game. (By this time I had ditched Vista and gone to Ubuntu, then dual-booted Ubuntu and Fedora).

Turns out – Nexon games are made only for Windows. It wasn’t a complete shock, it’s very common these days. However, there are plenty of people out there on Linux computers, trying to play this game. (I know, I’ve tried as well, every feasible way.)

Right now it appears that Nexon is concentrating on expanding their boundaries and opening servers in Europe. (Right now they have them in the US, Oceania, and South Korea. Go figure.) But there are PLENTY of Linux users – Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Arch, etc. etc. – that live in these areas that would LOVE to play this game! See: Here. And here. (I know these are both Ubuntu cases, but it’s all distros of Linux that are affected.)

Just for the record, so I don’t sound like a snotty little kid who hasn’t gotten what he wants for christmas, this is what I’ve tried:

1) Combat Arms with wine : nothing. won’t even install.
2) Combat Arms with PlayonLinux: nothing. won’t even install.
3) Combat Arms with CrossOverOffice: nothing. isn’t supported and won’t install.
4) Combat Arms with VMWare version of XP: nothing. won’t install.
5) Combat Arms with VirtualBox XP guest: will install!!! ……… but won’t play, since there seems to be a DirectX problem with VirtualBox.

There are my futile attempts at trying to play this game. If you think that Combat Arms should be expanded to be a cross-OS game, then comment on this post (at the bottom of this page). Just a first name and a quick blurb should be enough to count as a virtual signature.

  1. I would love to see this game with GNU/Linux support! Really great if it was made possible to install it with apt-get :P

  2. Hey, I like Linux but use XP mainly due to games just like this one that I love to play… I would really like to dump MicroScum in the trash and switch completely to Linux. If games like this one would release for Linux, I’d be out of the MS hell and well on my way to total enjoyment of my computer with Linux only. :)
    Nexon… Please port this and all your other games to LINUX!!! (The only REAL operating system!)

  5. I play the game on my xp partition and is one of the main reasons (and besides that unreal tournament 3 is still not available for linux) why i do not do a full disk linux install. Please bring the game to a linux system!

    Yea this game is tight when I played too bad there were hackers and many other things. but the awesome thing is that it’s free. You know that just by making a website about this issue it won’t do much unless someone from Nexon will see this. We gotta like go into their forums and post this link or start a topic in there. Gotta go from an inside to the outside.

    • I did actually think about this, but the developers got quite annoyed at me, telling me that they were looking into it and that in the meantime, we penguins should do what we do best: working with it. =) Keep at it guys, this is an awesome game!

  9. I just keep windows partition to play Combat Arms, please try to emulate it on Windows or whatever it works, i love my linux box, i hate switch to the windows stuff..

    I’m running ubuntu atm, and loving it… probably going to install XP for this very game…

    Would be nice if they could somehow help for example wine, so it could run CA…

  13. Combat Arms should able to play in Linux…

    Some people have played the game with Wine… But i don´t know how they did it.

  14. I love this GAME!!!! But i also love linux!!! so somebody please make this game available for it before i completely lose it over here!!!!

  15. It would be fantastic to have this game playable under Linux. I am an active player and it would be great not to have to dual boot in order to play the game.
